Forestry Mulching in Washtenaw County, Michigan
Acreage grown shut with honeysuckle, buckthorn and autumn olive, from Salem pasture to Saline field edges, ground to a chip layer in place.
Washtenaw County acreage comes in layers. The northwest around Dexter, Chelsea and Webster is hill and lake ground under oak woods. The Huron River valley carries a ribbon of wooded parcels from Scio down through Superior. The farm townships to the south and west, from Saline and Lodi across to Manchester and Freedom, are fields, hedgerows and woodlot corners. Wherever a parcel has sat for a few seasons, bush honeysuckle and buckthorn fill the shade, while autumn olive, box elder and mulberry push out into the open.
Forestry mulching is how we take those acres back. A high-flow tracked skid steer carries a FECON mulching head through brush and saplings, handling growth up to roughly 6-8 inches at the stem and larger trees in pieces. What it leaves is a chip layer, typically 2-4 inches, spread over roots that keep holding the soil. The forestry mulching page explains the method, the Washtenaw County page lists the rest of our work here, and the lot clearing in Washtenaw County page covers a single building lot or a split.
Washtenaw County is 40 to 70 minutes from our base in Royal Oak, and the drive is built into one written project price, quoted from photos or a walk-through. What we clear
- Honeysuckle and buckthorn thickets under the oaks around Dexter and Chelsea, and along the river through Scio and Superior.
- Old fields on the farm side that have filled in with autumn olive.
- Hedgerows and field edges where box elder and mulberry have crept out toward the crop.
- Horse-farm pasture, paddock edges and the woods behind the barn in Salem and Northfield.
- Hunting parcels in Lyndon, Sylvan and Dexter that border the Waterloo and Pinckney areas.
- Muck ground and low corners where brush grows back faster than anywhere else on the parcel.
What you get
- Open woods in place of a wall of brush, with the oaks and the river bank left standing.
- A chip layer that holds soil on slopes, so there is nothing to rake, stack or haul.
- Field edges you can mow or disk the day we finish.
- One written price for the whole acreage, travel included.
Where Forestry Mulching Comes Up in Washtenaw County
The acreage people in this county call us about most.
Horse-farm country in Salem and Northfield
The northeast corner sits close to Ann Arbor and is full of small farms and riding barns. Pasture that has slipped back to brush is taken down paddock by paddock, fence lines are opened for new board or wire, and trails go back through the woods behind. Pasture reclamation →
River and lake ground around Dexter and Chelsea
Slopes down to the Huron and the lakes grow brush thick right to the water. We take the understory down while the shade trees and the bank stay, and we walk the grade with you first so the route in and the route out are planned on the ground. The chips go down as a mat that keeps the soil in place. Lakefront clearing →
Old fields and hedgerows south and west
In Saline, Lodi, York, Manchester and Bridgewater the woods and the hedgerows move out a little more every year. We grind the woody edge back to the line you set so the field can return to hay, crop or a mower. Where a field is mostly grass with a woody border, the mulching vs brush hogging guide shows how the two methods split the work. Fence line clearing →
Thickets that closed in over the years
Parcels that were open woods a generation ago are a wall of honeysuckle and buckthorn now. The head takes the thicket down at the base and shreds the crowns, with the canopy trees left standing. Regrowth is expected, so we plan a return pass with you. Invasive growth removal →
How the Job Goes
Send photos and a map pin
Phone photos of the brush and the address price most acreage. Larger parcels we walk with you first.
Mark what stays
Mature oaks, a favorite maple, fence posts and well heads are pointed out and taped before the head starts. Anything inside the work area is planned with you on site.
Grind it in place
The mulching head works through brush and saplings, with larger trees taken in pieces, and a chip layer replaces the thicket.
Plan the follow-up
Honeysuckle and buckthorn resprout from the crowns that remain. We talk through a return pass or a mowing schedule so the ground stays open.
When to do it
Frozen ground is the season for muck and low corners, and leaf-off shows the hedgerows, fence lines and keeper trees clearly. Hunting parcels near Waterloo and Pinckney are cut in late summer so the ground settles before the season. Honeysuckle holds its leaves later than the oaks do, which makes it easy to spot in fall.
How it is priced
By the project: how dense the growth is, how many stems fill each section, the slope and soft ground, and the route the machine takes in. The written price is a single number with the drive included, and the pricing guide explains what moves it.

Forestry Mulching Questions We Hear in Washtenaw County
Can you mulch honeysuckle and buckthorn without taking the oaks?
Yes. The head works between the trunks and takes the understory down at ground level, while the canopy trees you tape stay standing. Open woods come back where there was a wall.
Will the buckthorn come back?
Some of it resprouts from the root crowns and from seed. A return pass in a later season, or a mowing schedule once the ground is open, keeps it from rebuilding.
How much acreage is worth bringing the mulcher out for?
A thicket behind the house and a wooded parcel of many acres both get a single written price that already includes the drive. Send photos and the address and you get one number for the job.
Can you work around horses at a Salem or Northfield farm?
Yes. We schedule around turnout and take one paddock at a time, with the animals kept in the far pasture while the machine works. Each new trail is walked with you before we leave.
What happens to old farm-field edges and hedgerows?
The woody edge is ground back to the line you set, leaving a strip of chips you can mow. The field then goes back to hay, crop or pasture, and a mower keeps the line from creeping forward again.
