Manchester is the southwest corner of Washtenaw County, about seventy minutes from Royal Oak, where the River Raisin comes through the hills at Sharon Hollow and the country opens into big, well-drained fields. Sharon and Freedom townships to the north are rolling and wooded, with Sharon Mills County Park and the Raisin; Manchester and Bridgewater to the south are big fields along Austin Road and US-12, with Watkins Lake State Park on the county line.
Two different jobs live here. In Sharon and Freedom the parcels are wooded and hilly, and the work is hunting trails, lanes and the Raisin bottoms on frozen ground. In Manchester and Bridgewater the fields are big and the brush is confined to the hedgerows and the woodlot edges, and the work is grinding those lines back to the survey stakes so the field can be farmed to the edge again. Either way the brush is left as chips and nothing is hauled seventy minutes back to Royal Oak.
