This corner of Oakland County is lake country: Cass Lake, Elizabeth Lake and Williams Lake in and around Waterford, Union Lake sitting right at the corner where Commerce, Waterford, West Bloomfield and White Lake townships all meet, Commerce Lake a little further west, and Walled Lake giving its name to the city on its shore. Cass Lake alone covers close to thirteen hundred acres and reaches into West Bloomfield and Keego Harbor as well as Waterford. Proud Lake Recreation Area, three thousand acres of the Huron River valley in Commerce Township, sits in the middle of it, and the private lots around all of these lakes were platted as cottages a long time before most of them became year-round homes.

A cottage lot bought for the water decades ago usually came with a lawn down to the shoreline, and most of them have not seen that shoreline clearly in years: buckthorn, box elder and grapevine fill in from the property line down to the waterline, until it is a wall between the house and the dock. Wooded ground back from the water, toward Proud Lake and along the township lines, fills in with the same honeysuckle under the oaks that every lake township in the county grows. We work the banks from the top down, holding the slope with a chip layer as we go, and clear the wooded back acreage the same way we would anywhere else.
