Flushing is the far northwest corner of our Genesee County work, about seventy-five minutes from Royal Oak, built up along the Flint River where it winds through the township a few miles below Flint. The unincorporated community of Brent Creek sits along Mt. Morris Road between Nichols and Seymour roads, and the township is otherwise a mix of river-bottom fields and the subdivisions that have grown up around the City of Flushing. Beecher Road and Mt. Morris Road both cross the township on their way toward Flint, and the farmland between them still floods the same way it did when the first mill and dam went in on the river generations ago.

The river is the reason the ground behaves the way it does. Flushing Township’s fields flood in most springs, and the low ground along the Flint River grows willow, box elder and cottonwood thick enough that a mower never touches it. Away from the river, field edges and fence rows between the remaining farm parcels fill in with wild grape and box elder, and the subdivision lots on the higher ground get the same brush any built-out area does. Even the drier fields between Brent Creek and the city carry old fence lines from when the township was worked edge to edge, and those thicken with brush the same way any farm county’s hedgerows do. We take the river bottom on frozen ground and the upland fields any time of year.
