Canton Township is the most built-up ground we work, twenty-three miles west of Detroit and about forty minutes from Royal Oak down Interstate 275. It is almost entirely subdivided now, with the historic crossroads at Cherry Hill and Sheldon still holding older lots among the new urbanist streets built up around them, and the last open parcels sitting near the Michigan Avenue and Ford Road corridors. The south of the township drains toward the Lower Rouge River and Pine Creek; the northeast drains through Tonquish and Garden creeks into the Middle Rouge. Interstate 275 runs the length of the township’s east side with exits at Michigan Avenue and Ford Road, and Ford Road itself is signed as M-153 where it crosses the township.

None of that stops the brush. Subdivision outlots, retention pond banks and the buffer strips between phases of a development grow buckthorn and Callery pear every year whether anyone is watching or not. Backyards that back onto a creek or a drain fill in with box elder and wild grape within a few seasons, and the handful of remaining open parcels near the township line go to autumn olive fast. A pond bank or buffer strip left two or three seasons grows in just as thick as any fence row in the farm counties, and it is just as hard for a landscaping crew to walk into with a mower. We grind all of it into a chip layer where it stands, so there is no brush pile sitting at the curb of a subdivision street, and the ground is ready to mow again the same week.
