St. Clair County is the far east edge of where we work, about an hour from Royal Oak up I-69 or M-19, and it is worth the drive: forty-acre hunting parcels, old farmsteads and woodlots that have not seen a machine in twenty years. The north half of the county, Clyde, Kenockee, Brockway, Grant and Greenwood, is rolling and wooded along the Black River and Mill Creek. The west, Capac, Mussey, Berlin, Riley and Emmett, is flat farm country. The south and east along the St. Clair River is lake-plain clay, and the I-69 corridor through Wadhams, Kimball and Wales is where the new houses are going.
The ground tells us what to expect. Wet clay in the flat townships grows willow, dogwood and cottonwood thickets in every low spot and phragmites in every ditch. Old pasture goes to hawthorn and autumn olive. Woodlot edges creep into fields, and the two-tracks through the woods close up with cherry and box elder saplings a few years after the last time they were driven. On the hills up north the oak and beech woods fill in underneath with honeysuckle and grapevine.
