Capac is the west end of St. Clair County on I-69, an hour from Royal Oak, and it is flat farm country all the way around: crop fields, sod farms and muck ground cut into big squares by drainage ditches and hedgerows along Capac, Downey, Kilgore and Martin roads, with woodlots in the corners, farmsteads on every section, and hunting parcels toward Lynn and Berlin townships.

Capac ground is laid out in squares, and the brush lives on the lines between them. A ditch bank that was clean ten years ago is a wall of willow now, and the fence row beside it has grown into a hedgerow that shades the first two rows of corn. Those lines come out as chip strips, on frozen ground for the ditches and whenever the field is dry for the rows, and the square goes back to full size. The farmsteads and the hunting woods toward Lynn get the same machine.
