Berlin Township is the southwest corner of St. Clair County, fifty minutes from Royal Oak, with Allenton five miles south of the I-69 exit and Berville down the road toward Armada. It is flat farm country: hay and crop fields cut by ditches and hedgerows along Almont, Belle River and Beardsley roads, the Belle River running through it past the old mill site at Lesterville, woodlots and hunting parcels on the back forties, and farmsteads on every section.

The back forty is the Berlin Township job. Most sections here have a woodlot at the far end with a hedgerow running to it, and both have been taking a little more of the field every year since the last fence came down. We grind the hedgerow to a chip strip, push the woodlot edge back to the survey line, reopen the two-track into the woods for the hunters, and the field goes back to full width. Farmsteads and building sites get done on the same trip.
