Memphis straddles the Macomb and St. Clair county line on a bluff over the Belle River, fifty-five minutes from Royal Oak up M-19. The country around it, Richmond Township to the south and Riley Township to the north, is flat farm ground with the river bottom running through it: hay and crop fields cut by hedgerows and ditches, woodlots and hunting parcels along Bordman, Memphis Ridge and Belle River roads, and old farmsteads on every section.

The Belle River is the reason Memphis exists and the reason half the parcels around it have a bottom nobody can mow. Willow, dogwood, box elder and cottonwood take the floodplain in a few seasons, and the only time a machine belongs down there is when the ground is frozen hard. So the bottoms are January work, the hedgerows and farmsteads on the upland fill the rest of the year, and the hunting parcels in Riley Township get their trails and lanes in late summer.
