Troy is about fifteen minutes up I-75 from our yard, and it is built two ways at once. Along Big Beaver, Crooks Road and the I-75 frontage, corporate and office campuses sit on landscaped ground with a wooded buffer strip or a retention pond edge that the mowing contract never quite reaches. Away from the office parks, Troy is older subdivisions built from the 1950s through the 1980s, a lot of them on what was farmland before, and the back fence lines still carry the fencerow trees the farms left standing. Sylvan Glen, the golf course and lake park off Rochester Road, and the hundred acres of meadow, marsh and river woods at the Stage Nature Center, sit in the middle of all of it.

A wooded buffer strip on an office property grows buckthorn and box elder the same as any fence row once the landscaping contract stops at its mowed edge, and the ponds built to hold stormwater grow a ring of the same brush around the bank every year nobody cuts it back. On the older residential streets, a backyard that backed up to open field when the house went in now backs up to fifty years of volunteer growth along that same line, and the subdivisions built closest to Sylvan Glen and the nature center often back straight into second-growth woods that have never been touched. We clear the buffer strips and pond banks for the office properties, open the back lines on the subdivision lots, and take out brush along the Rochester Road corridor, all ground into a chip layer where it stands.
