Novi and Wixom sit at the top of the Middle Rouge watershed: the Walled Lake branch of the river rises in Novi, in the marshy ground south of Walled Lake, and works its way toward Northville and Plymouth from there. Wixom, just to the northwest, has the same wooded lots and subdivision outlots as its neighbor. West of Novi, Lyon Township is the part of this corridor that has not finished turning from farmland into subdivisions, with fields and fencerows still working alongside the new streets, about thirty minutes from our yard in Royal Oak.

Along Twelve Mile Road and Grand River Avenue, the office and commercial corridors that run through Novi, the outlots and retention pond banks behind the buildings grow buckthorn and Callery pear every year the same as any subdivision common ground. Closer to the water, wooded lots fill in underneath with honeysuckle, and in Lyon Township the fencerows between the working fields and the new subdivisions thicken with box elder and wild grape a little more each season. We clear the outlots and pond banks to a mulch layer the landscaper can maintain, open the wooded lots back up under the canopy, and take the fencerows and field edges back to the line in Lyon Township, all in the same pass.
