Huron Charter Township is the last rural stretch of Downriver Wayne County, about forty minutes from Royal Oak, built around the unincorporated communities of New Boston, Waltz and Willow. The Huron River flows southeast through the middle of it, and three divisions of the Huron-Clinton Metroparks system, Lower Huron, Oakwoods and Willow, line the river on the way toward the Wayne-Monroe county line. What is left between the parks and the interstate is still farmland and wetland, more open ground than almost anywhere else we work in this county. New Boston carries its own ZIP code and works as the township’s hub, while Waltz and Willow stay smaller crossroads along the roads they are named for.

That openness is exactly what grows in fastest. Field edges and fence rows between the farm parcels fill with box elder and wild grape, the wetlands and low ground near the metroparks grow willow and dogwood too thick for a mower, and the river banks themselves need the same careful work as any lake or river lot. Even the metropark boundaries themselves grow a hedge of brush along the property line, since wetland growth does not know where the park ends and the private ground begins. Wooded building sites near Waltz and Willow are still being cleared for new houses on the larger parcels. We work all of it with the same machine, mulching where it stands and brush hogging the open acreage.
