Chelsea sits on the edge of the Waterloo Recreation Area, the biggest state park in the Lower Peninsula, an hour from Royal Oak on I-94. North and west of town, Sylvan and Lyndon townships are hilly moraine with Cavanaugh, Mill, North and Green lakes, oak woods and swamps; the Goose Lake State Game Area sits southwest of town, and Lima and the rest of Sylvan to the south and east are farm country.
