Fenton sits fifty-five minutes north of Royal Oak on US-23, right where Genesee County’s lake country runs into the same glacial hills that give Holly and Groveland Township their kettle lakes a few miles south in Oakland County. Lake Fenton anchors the township along with the smaller lakes and the unincorporated communities of Lakeside and Bayport Park, and the Shiawassee River, which starts in Springfield Township back in Oakland County, runs through the middle of Fenton on its way north toward Linden. A canoe take-out point below the lake sits right in Fenton, a reminder of how much water moves through this part of the township even where none of it shows up as a named lake.

Cottage lots on Lake Fenton and the smaller lakes around it grow buckthorn, box elder and grapevine down to the water within a few unmowed seasons, the same as any lake community in our service area. Away from the water, the township still has hobby farms and old pasture along Torrey and Owen roads that goes to autumn olive and multiflora rose once the grazing stops, and the Shiawassee River bottomland grows willow and dogwood in the low spots. Fence lines around the smaller kettle lakes need the same clearing as the pasture does, since a shoreline left alone for even a few years closes up as fast as any fence row.
